Our Quail Tale

Welcome to The Quail Tale! My name is Jessica, and I have been involved with Quail for the past five years.

First, I would like to tell you about my journey with Quail. I have always had a passion for gardening and all things related to self-sufficiency. I grew up in my great-grandparents' yards, full of fresh produce, collecting eggs, chickens clucking, and even a bull at one point!

When I came across the option to have Quail, it wasn't easy to find somewhere that was even selling quail, let alone point-of-lay pullets or hens. As I was dipping my toes at this stage, I wanted to find a point off lay to get me started and for primary eggs. I ended up locating a farm that sold them up in Mount Evelyn (I live in Victoria, Australia). I collected four hens and brought them home to my set-up, a small rabbit run. It was a flat pack from Bunnings that I found on the Facebook marketplace, and I was set. After about two weeks of settling, I collected four eggs daily.

Now, it has not been all rainbows on my journey. Early on, after six months, I came out one morning to find one of my Quail hens dead in the pen. At the time, I was devastated and didn't know what had happened. Looking back now and having learnt what I have now, I believe she didn't have good genetics or may have been older than I originally thought.

I still have one of my girls from that original set of four that I bought four years ago.

Once again, during this time, I found it hard to locate a place to purchase Quail, so my one, Leonadra, remained content in her solitary life. We also became pregnant, had our first child, and moved house, a very busy time in our lives.

Once I started back at work and our baby had grown a bit, I started looking again.

After a few months, I was able to initially acquire two friends for Leonadra, followed by a breeding set of tuxedo browns in April, a group of week-olds at the end of April and from them I have been hatching my stock.

Now that I have built up my flock, I aim to continue spreading the word about the beautiful benefits of Quail in Australia.

Why Choose The Quail Tale?

Here at the Quail Tale, we choose to raise our birds in conditions that are ethical, humane and as close to how they would live naturally as possible.

Quails have the natural ability to fly and tend to do this hard and fast, going straight up if and when startled. Due to the way Coturnix Quails have been domesticated, they can't be free-ranged in the traditional sense like chickens.

We choose to provide our Quails in as close as possible to free range as possible. This means that once feathered out, they are kept in enclosures that are outdoors, on grass, in nature with places to hide, sleep, play and soak up the sun. They are fed on a diet of high-quality gamebird feed, herbs, plants and veggies, living the happiest and healthiest lives.

We pride ourselves on our genetic diversity, selection process and breeding stock, ensuring that we only provide the best birds possible.

Quail are our passion, and we want to share them with the world! From the ability to create a highly sustainable addition to your backyard food source or just for cute friendly pets, the possibilities are endless.

At 'The Quail Tale,' we are happy to provide ongoing support for all our customers, ideal for those just starting. We are also happy to share our ongoing journey with you.

The quail shown in our images is of the original hens that we started with and our breeding flock quail.

There are many quail suppliers out there, however, we belive in providing our quail the best possible conditions and life to provide the best products for us.

Our Quailosophy

Our Quailosophy is to provide a wonderful, enclosed, safe space for our quail to live, lay and thrive, this is our number one priority. Even though our quail are kept in outdoor enclosures, once fully feathered, they have access to grass, garden material, bugs and fresh air. They are relocated regularly to ensure constant access to lush grass and are provided with nuthouse vegetable scraps routinely throughout the week. They are checked in on at least twice a day, to check on overall health, water, food, and overall well-being.

We choose to keep our quail as close to nature as possible and we believe that we are achieving this in our way of housing our flock. By having this philosophy and mindset, we belive that we have the happiest quail living their best lives.

Our products

The Quail Tale focuses is to produces happy, as free-range as possible Coturnix Quail, fertile and eating eggs. We don't use artificial light, which means that during winter, cooler weather, seasonal molts and decresed sunlight hours, our flocks lays less and may even take a break due to the shorter daylight days. We do this to allow them to go through their natural cycles of life. During this season, our stock will be limited. However, it is best for the birds, and the patience is worth it, as in the warmer months, they lay an egg a day!

We work to maintain a genetically diverse flock to minimize issues with fertility, hatch rates and quality.
